Excellent question! The Firearm Safe Storage Plan is built for everybody who owns one revolver or a multi-generational collection of investment pieces. These are some of the reasons why the Firearm Safe Storage Plan would be useful to you:
If you or your family member is advancing in years and are showing signs of dementia or Alzheimer, or otherwise believe the owner should not possess a firearm for their safety;
If you are ordered by a court to surrender your firearms and you do not trust civil servants to properly store and protect your valuable collection;
If your recently deceased spouse owned firearms and you don’t want to have them around anymore, but there are people in your family who you would want to give the firearms to in the future;
If you are a Personal Representative or Trustee of an estate and you are uncomfortable handling the liquidation of the collection;
If you are going through a tough time in your life and you think it best to not be in possession of your firearms;
If you are entering voluntarily or involuntary commitment and want to have the opportunity to regain possession of your firearms upon completion of treatment;
If you are leaving the state of Washington and do not want to or cannot take your firearms with you, or you are concerned about whether state law would ultimately permit you to bring those firearms back into this state upon your return;
If you are an heir of a family member who instructed to bequeath to you their collection but are currently a prohibited person with the anticipation to regain your firearm rights after application for a restoration of your constitutional rights;
If your death is imminent and you do not want to burden your spouse with your collection because they are uncomfortable with handling it or because they have no idea as to the true value of each item, or if you have intention to give your firearms to your children who are not yet of legal age of possession and you wish to ensure they can receive them once they come of age.
And for many other purposes! Set a meeting with us to discuss your specific situation and see how Caliber Fiduciary can help you protect your investment and future right to possess firearms.
1) Meet to discuss your firearm storage plan. At this meeting we will collect information to prepare the plan for your signature.
2) Meet in person to execute documents to facilitate your firearm storage plan.
3) Transfer one or all of your collection to Caliber Fiduciary for safe storage. Caliber will make necessary arrangements to store your collection in a confidential, secure facility, making sure to comply with State and Federal Law.
4) Enjoy knowing that your firearms are safely stored, insured, and available to you, or your eligible beneficiaries upon your request.
1) Give Caliber notice of your desire to take possession of one or all of your firearms presently in safe storage. Caliber will request certain information from you to ensure that, in its sole discretion, you are qualified under state law to regain possession of your firearms.
2) Caliber will prepare certain documents and deliver them to you, along with instructions on where and how to retrieve your firearm(s).
3) You will need to make application with an FFL for a background check pursuant to state law and wait the requisite waiting period before taking possession of your firearms.
Yes! Removing your firearms from the Safe Storage Plan does not revoke the plan. It does effectively suspend costs that you would pay to Caliber Fiduciary during the time when Caliber is not managing any of your assets. Simply come back to us and provide notice of which firearms you wish to put back into safe storage and we will facilitate the process.
There are still options for you. While you do not have the right to possess your firearms, you still have the power to determine what happens with the value of those items. We can help you make transfers to your children and family, beneficiaries, or to liquidate one or more of your collection and turn it into cash. If you instruct Caliber to sell one of your firearms, the cash generated by the sale will become immediately distributable to you, or you can instruct Caliber to invest that money.
Rest Assured, this inventory is a confidential instrument that is solely owned by you and will not become a public record. There may be subsequent documents that must be prepared and produced in certain circumstances which may become public record by other means. But the plan itself is private and will not be released by Caliber to any requesting party, even by subpoena. In this process, Caliber Fiduciary acts, in part, as your legal counsel for safe storage and therefore you are protected by attorney-client privilege regarding the communications and records retained by Caliber Fiduciary.
Yes, in order to properly index your collection, and to ensure correct billing and asset retention, we must take an inventory of your firearms and other assets that you put into safe storage.
Yes, however there may be less expensive ways to handle other sorts of assets. Ammunition is the obvious item to include, for when an order prohibiting firearms enters against a person they are also prohibited from possessing ammunition. In such a case Caliber can include your ammunition in its storage plan and storage of ammunition is less costly than storage of firearms. However, depending on how much ammunition you own, you may find the cost for storage to be prohibitively expensive. Talk to us about this during your initial meeting and we can discuss options.
- There is an initial set-up that requires legal documentation to be prepared and executed.
- After the initial cost, Caliber Fiduciary will charge you a monthly fee to manage and store your items.
- If you instruct Caliber Fiduciary to sell one or more of your firearms, there will be a transaction charge for each firearm sold.
- If you wish to retrieve your firearms, there will be a one-time charge by Caliber Fiduciary to do its due diligence, i.e. review necessary documents based on your specific situation: i.e. mental health records, background check, communicate with family members
- If you wish to retrieve your firearms, you will have to pay an FFL for a background check. This charge is non-refundable even if your background check does not result in release of your firearm(s) to you. You can do one background check to re-obtain possession of your entire collection to keep these costs down.
